Norwegian expat injured and mother-in-law killed in horror car crash in Thailand
A Norwegian expat was injured while his mother-in-law was killed in a horror crash in Thailand.
Jan Sivle, 38, went on a holiday trip with his family and in-laws to enjoy a sightseeing tour in Nakhon Si Thammarat province on July 7.
The ex-pat was mesmerised by the beautiful view on the way to the Gulf of Thailand so he reportedly decided to pull over on the mountain road for a moment to appreciate it and take selfies with his family.
However, upon stopping the sedan, the vehicle shockingly crashed down the 65ft-deep sloping cliff which left him, his wife Suwandi, his two daughters Natalie and Inthira, and father-in-law Prasarn Singthong injured while his mother-in-law Lamai, 69, did not survive the crash.
Police Captain Chakkrit Boonhroe said: ‘Locals found the car and called us and the rescuers for help. Six people were extracted from the sedan that fell down the ravine but one of them did not survive.
‘We are looking into why the car fell off the edge of the road and crashed.'
The Norwegian ex-pat and his family were rushed to Sichon Hospital where they are recovering. His mother-in-law Lamai, 69, was also taken to the same hospital for an autopsy.
Police are still looking into the cause of the crash.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools, cheap loans for cars, notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws and chronic under-investment in infrastructure may hamper the efforts.
