A majestic supermoon, said to be the largest full moon of the year, illuminated Saint Petersburg in Russia as it crested the skies on Wednesday evening.

July's full moon - also called the Buck Moon or Hay Moon - shone bright over the city on July 13.

It was the third supermoon in as many months, and was reportedly the biggest for 2022.

Supermoons are full moons that occur when the moon is at its closest point to the Earth - a position known as perigee.

The next supermoon called the Sturgeon Moon is the last for the year and is expected to happen on August 11.
