Historic Pilot gig boats crews by six rowers and a coxswain. Compete annually for the Atkinson trophy which is a diesel piston with a bent con rod mounted on a wooden plinth. The race involves 4 Gig boats and is followed by fishing and pleasure craft full of supporters. Starting is from inland at the Gannel river and proceeds to sea across Fistral Bay and around Newquay Headland and the Gazzle terminating at the finishing line at Newquay harbour mouth. Many of the gig boats owned by Newquay rowing club which is the spiritual home of Cornish gig racing are very old with the boat named Newquay built in 1812. It has claim to be oldest racing craft in use globally.
