A missing Canadian tourist was found dead in a grassland behind a hotel in Thailand.

Glenn Vernon, 79, visited the country to meet his young Thai girlfriend in Pattaya on July 6.

After the sweet reunion, he stayed alone at the Twin Palms Resort Pattaya hotel where he was reported missing on July 12.

Shockingly, the foreign pensioner's corpse was found three days later on July 15 when a housekeeper went to pick some wild herbs behind the hotel.

Housekeeper Da Promthung, 54, said: ‘I was picking some morning glory when I smelled something bad. I was shocked when I saw the skeleton.'

Police Captain Puttharak Shonkhamhan said: ‘The body was found about 500 meters away from the hotel. The tourist police went to the hotel with rescuers when we were called.'

The tourist, believed to have been dead for at least five days, was wearing a white shirt, black pants when he was found. A bag with 300 Canadian dollars inside was also found near the body.

Officers contacted the tourist's girlfriend for information but said that she could no longer contact Glenn as soon as he stayed at the hotel in Pattaya.

The Canadian reportedly had a cancer history and memory loss but the cause of death remained unclear. He was transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine to perform an autopsy while police informed the embassy about the incident.
