Ladles of Love, a Cape Town based community food charity, has attempted to build the world’s largest food can mosaic of anti-apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela.

More than 54,000 cans of food were used to assemble the mosaic of Mandela. The organisation is simultaneously building a South African flag mosaic of food cans in Johannesburg, in order to establish another world record. More than 90,000 cans of food are being used in the combined project.

Ladles of Love founder Danny Diliberto started feeding underprivileged Cape Town communities during South Africa’s level 5 COVID lockdown in 2020. He says the planning behind the Mandela Day event started in March and is hoping to reach more communities in order to alleviate hunger.

One of the soup kitchens supported by Ladles of Love is that of Maria Dikololo who provides breakfast and lunch for young children before and after school.

The event has been held in the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Several companies and non-profit organisations came together to sponsor the initiative.

Danny Diliberto a food industry entrepreneur, the founder of Ladles of Love, started feeding underprivileged Cape Town communities, during South Africa’s level 5 Coronavirus lockdown in 2020. Diliberto says the planning behind the Mandela Day event started in March and is hoping to reach more communities in order to alleviate hunger.

Ladles of Love also supports Maria Dikololo’s feeding scheme which feeds young children before and after school. Her scheme starts in the morning and operates till the late afternoon, providing hot meals to hundreds of school going children.

Mandela Day is celebrated globally to honour the life and commemorate the birthday of Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected President. Volunteers do 67 minutes of charity work on 18 July every year.
