A fuel tanker truck crashed into vehicles killing at least 11 people in Indonesia today.

The lorry's brakes are believed to have failed causing it to plough through the line of waiting cars and motorcycles in Bekasi City, West Java, July 18.

Senior Commissioner Latif Usman, Traffic Director of the Jakarta Metro Police, said: 'We can provide temporary data, there are 11 people who died in this accident. But we will check this again.'

The bodies of 11 people who died were taken to the Kramat Jati Hospital.

Latif said the crash site was a downhill road and there were traffic lights. At that time, many vehicles were stopped.

He added: 'There were 12 vehicles that were hit. They were 10 motorcycles and two cars.'

Latif explained said his police would re-collect the data as well as investigate the scene.

Police found no traces of skid marks from brakes around the crash site. The tanker truck is suspected to have failed brakes.

The policeman said: 'We have arrested the truck driver. We will interrogate him later. We will definitely carry out further investigations to determine the cause of this accident.'
