Woman, 29, shares 'game-changing' hack for getting AUTOMATIC train refunds for delays and cancellations
Keep forgetting to apply for refunds on delayed trains and finding yourself out of pocket?
Well now you can get it automatically, without the pesky admin.
Travel blogger Laura, 29, from Liverpool, recently stumbled on a simple trick when she was booking tickets to London – and found the whole process incredibly straightforward.
In a recent Instagram post (@thriftylondoner) Laura revealed the way get paid automatically is to book directly with train operators, which allow you to opt in for automatic repayment – unlike sites like Trainline.
“How many times have you not bothered to claim a refund because of the ridiculous level of admin involved?” writes Laura in the video’s caption.
“If a train is 30 mins late, I am usually reluctant to fill out the forms required to get the small refund I am due.
“But if you opt in for automatic delay repay? It’s a game changer!”
She shared her revelation with her 17,000 Instagram followers and on her personal finance blog Thrifty Londoner – and is keen to spread the word further.
“If you search for ‘automatic delay repay’ on a train company website, you can usually sign in with the details you used to purchase your advance ticket, and then opt into automatic delay repay," she told NeedToKnow.online.
“Usually, your claim will be processed automatically within 24 hours, and then payment made around 5 days later.
“Depending on the length of the delay, you could be eligible for a full or partial refund.”
Often, she adds, passengers can be eligible for a repayment for just a 15-minute delay.
She added: “I used to always book with Trainline, but now book directly with Avanti.
“Whenever I have a delay of 15 minutes or more, I receive compensation!”
Laura, started travel blogging in 2018 to share tips for making life in the capital more affordable.
And, with the cost of living rising, that advice is now more needed than ever.
She said: “I decided to start sharing tips about money management after I moved to London and found myself with a low salary and high living costs.
“I quickly realised that I needed to have a handle on my finances to avoid going into debt.
“I kept looking into personal finance more and more, and found that there wasn’t a woman my age talking about important topics like pensions and investing in a way that was easy to understand and relatable.
“I started sharing because I wanted to break taboos about money and start jargon-free conversations about personal finance.”
