A monitor lizard panicked customers and security officers when the reptile crawled on the lawn of a bank in Indonesia.

Footage filmed on the yard of Bank BNI in the city of Bukittinggi, West Sumatra province, today (July 21), shows bank security officers and an animal rescue team from the Bukittinggi Reptile Animal Community (B-Reptanic) trying to catch a monitor lizard hiding under a car.

Afdal Dahnil, a bank security officer, said that the monitor lizard is thought to have come from the culvert on the other side.

"Earlier there was a customer who was going to withdraw money at the ATM, he was surprised when he saw a monitor lizard near the ATM. I approached, but the monitor lizard ran and hid under the customer's car in the parking lot," Dahnil said.

The team almost managed to catch the monitor lizard, but the aggressive monitor lizard fought it off and ran back into the bank yard.

The lizards forced the newly arrived bank guests to stay in the car for fear of being attacked by lizards.

The monitor lizard that had run to the road once again hid under a car that was parked on the side of the road, then ran into the drainage which is currently under construction.

The B-Reptanic team reminded drainage workers and security personnel to contact them again if monitor lizards were to come again.
