Thailand has already broken its last year's record after exporting more than 500,000 tons of durians to China only six months into 2022.

More than 509,000 tons of the pungent fruit with a total value of 54.4 million baht or a little more than 1.2million GBP were sent to China between February 1 and June 17 alone.

Footage shows fruit stalls selling different varieties of durian to locals and tourists in Bangkok.

Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said that the two Asian countries plan to expand their fruit export channels on June 24.

He said: ‘The Prime Minister admires the strong Thai-China relations despite the challenging times and is ready to expand cooperation for the mutually beneficial development of the two countries.

‘He would also like to thank farmers and entrepreneurs for implementing strict government measures in maintaining high-quality product exports as specified in the destination country.'

Durian is a tropical fruit distinguished by its large spikes and pungent smell. It has a sweet taste and creamy consistency despite the strong odours.

In Asia, durian is sometimes referred to as the ‘King of Fruit' after fanatics drive prices of its best varieties to ridiculous amounts. In 2019, a durian sold for 40,134 GBP at an auction in Thailand's Nonthaburi province.
