Baby deer rescued after leg was stuck from chainlink fence in New York
A baby deer was rescued after its leg was stuck on a chainlink fence in New York.
The fawn tried to jump over the fence to enter a property in West Seneca, but its limb was unfortunately caught in the fence on July 8.
Police responded to the area after residents called for assistance in freeing the wild creature.
Body-cam footage shows cops carefully removing the young deer's limb from the holes of the fence.
A spokesman from the West Seneca Police Department said: ‘During times when Animal Control isn't available, we often get called upon to free deer from nets, railings, fences.'
The officers were about to clock out from their night duty when they received an urgent call early morning from a house owner.
Police found the frantic creature struggling to free itself from the structure and immediately helped.
Two officers carried the deer to restrain it as it was panicking and could hurt itself, while another officer, who wore the body camera, twisted the chain link to widen the hole and free the animal's hoof.
The creature was freed in about five minutes unhurt and ran back to the wild.
West Seneca's deer population have soared over the years without the presence of natural predators, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic when they almost went uninterrupted to feed on vegetation in yards and gardens.
Local officials created a Deer Task Force last year to address the issue as the growing population reportedly resulted in increased wildlife contact in neighbourhoods and car-deer collisions on highways.
