A couple has been left baffled after finding a bizarre collection of bones in their home – which they only discovered during renovations.

Cassidy Casale and Eton Marritt, both 24, from Ontario, Canada, bought their house at the end of March 2022 with the dream of being able to renovate their very first home.

But when they first broke ground on the house in April, the pair started to make some strange discoveries.

At first they were relatively innocent, including a series of newspapers from the 1960s.

While they thought this was “very cool”, what they found next was far more chilling – bones.

Whilst project manager Ethan was trying to sort out electrical wiring underneath the flooring of the house, he unexpectedly came across several of the bones.

Initially the couple were worried when they saw the remains as they were “oddly large” and “questionable”.

“Finding the bones was a huge shock to us and had us worried for a while,” Cassidy, a high-rise land developer, said.

“Our house doesn't have a basement, only a dirt crawl space that is about 2 feet deep.

“When Eton was crawling through to do electrical wiring he unexpectedly ran into several bones.

“Some were very obviously rodent bones but there was one that was oddly large and questionable – this was the swan humerus.

“Luckily a zoo archaeologist was able to quickly identify them and the investigation was over.

“We left the bones where they were just as a safety precaution to ensure we didn't disturb anything.

“To this day we have no idea how the bones would've got down there.

“The only way to the crawl space is through the interior hatch door, there are no openings from the outside as the exterior is completely solid stone.

“Some people believe the house was built on top of the swan whether it was dead or alive at the time, but for 130 years later, it was oddly well preserved.”

With the unusual findings behind them, the couple is still continuing to renovate their house which they bought for $615,000 CAD (£395,000).

Cassidy says the couple was eager for a project.

She added: “We liked the quirky features of the old house and knew we'd be able to work with its charm to make it great.

“Although it may not have been our first choice, it's been a great adventure so far!”

Along with the challenge of renovating an old home, the couple also took it upon themselves to work on an “extreme” budget.

Almost everything the pair have bought for the house has either been reused, second-hand or refinished.

The projected work was quoted at $100,000 (£64,000) and so far, the couple has only spent a little over $10,000 (£6,400) of that budget, and is still midway through renovations.

Cassidy said: “Old homes throw a lot of curve balls which you can't plan for until you begin tearing down walls and really getting deep into it.

"Eton and I are doing all of the work ourselves while working full time so we aren't moving at super speed but we are spending every evening and weekend there working away!

"Our favourite room would have to be the kitchen. We took the plaster off the wall and exposed a beautiful red brick. The house has a modern farmhouse vibe and everything flows so well.

"We are focusing on the interior for right now and creating a second floor in the attic has been a pretty big task, however once the interior is done, we plan to focus on the exterior.

“We're going to completely change the look of the house and add a built-in deck feature."

Cassidy and Eton are hoping they can move into their new home next week with their pet husky, Lilo.
