The execution of four political activists in Myanmar has sparked protests around the world this week.

The killings were condemned by Burmese activists, who staged a protest in front of the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand on Tuesday, July 26.

Waving Myanmar flaglets, they shouted to 'fight for Myanmar' and for incumbent Burmese Prime Minister Min Aung Hlaing to step down from office.

Min Aung Hlaing declared himself leader of the country after seizing power through a military coup in 2021.

Myanmar's military junta announced on Monday that it had executed four pro-democracy activists accused of being involved in 'violent resistance.' They were identified as Ko Jimmy, Phyo Zeyar Thaw, Hla Myo Aung and Aung Thura Zaw.

A junta spokesperson said the executions were carried out on Saturday. It was Myanmar's first use of capital punishment since the late 1980s. Burmese people were outraged at the executions, which triggered protests in Myanmar, Thailand, London, Japan and other countries.

The country has suffered ongoing unrest and uprisings from rebel groups following the removal of well-liked leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a military coup last February. Soldiers responded with barbaric force to protests.
