An exhausted horse was finally rescued from an open septic tank in India, where it have been trapped all night.

The horse, which was clearly in distress, had been struggling for hours to free itself, until locals finally rescued it on Friday 29 July, when this video was filmed.

The open septic tank was in a government health centre in Mirganj area of Bareilly city, in Uttar Pradesh state.

According to locals, the horse fell in overnight on Thursday, as walls around the health centre have collapsed, allowing animals to enter.

In the morning, the poor creature was discovered and local officials were alerted.

A thick rope was tied around the horse and a group of locals used it to pull the creature from the hole.

Locals blamed municipal authorities for the incident, as the open septic tank was a danger and should be covered to prevent accidents.

Locals said the horse was believed to have been trapped for more than 15 hours.

A vet tended to some injuries it had picked up in the incident.
