A Vietnamese mother and daughter drowned after allegedly ignoring safety signs to go swimming on a Thai beach.

Mum Hoang Hai Van, 51, and Nguyen Chuc An, 15, went to Nai Thon Beach for a morning paddle with a friend when they hit by the strong waves and dragged away by the current in Phuket province on July 31.

The pair reportedly ventured into the water despite red warning flags raised as safety signs preventing tourists from swimming were put up on the beach.

They were struck by tall waves and pushed 20 metres away from shore before lifeguards arrived to pull them off the water.

Shockingly, their deaths come after at least five other holidaymakers - including a British man on his honeymoon - drowned in the same region, which is one of the most popular destinations in the world for tourists.

Sakuthap Police Station officer Police Lieutenant Colonel Suporn Muangkhai said: ‘The beach had strong waves that day, so lifeguards put red flags along the beach.

'The victims were with one other Vietnamese person from the Pullman Nai Thon Hotel when they went swimming despite the signs, and two of them drowned.'

Aside from the red flags tied along the beach, police said there were signs saying ‘Dangerous. Do not swim more than 20 metres from the shore' to warn tourists about the tides.

Staff from the hotel also reportedly police that the tourists were warned that it was dangerous to swim in the water during that time but they were ignored.

After the mother and daughter, both from Hanoi, were dragged ashore they were given CPR by rescuers before being rushed to Thalang Hospital.

However, medics confirmed they were dead upon arrival, while the other Vietnamese national was uninjured from the incident.

Post-mortem examinations will now be conducted to confirm the cause of death. Police have informed the Vietnamese Embassy in Bangkok about the incident to contact their family.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Suporn Muangkhai added: 'We have ordered hotels to warn guests not to play in the sea when the warning flags are showing.

'This time of the year is very dangerous because there are often storms and the sea is rough.'
