Firefighters sawed open a metal gate to rescue a pet cat with a broken leg that was trapped in its grilles.

The officers were called by the cat's owner after it snuck into the neighbour's house which was being renovated in Samut Prakan province, Thailand on July 19.

While squeezing itself through the grates, its leg became stuck, leaving it injured and alone in the empty home.

Its pained wails were heard by the neighbour, who contacted the emergency services and asked permission from the homeowner to enter.

Footage shows the hapless kitty lying on the floor with one of its hind legs jammed in the narrow gap of the metal gate. The firefighters hacked away at the grilles with a handsaw, and freed the cat in 30 minutes.

Officer Kamolsak Charote said: 'We were informed by residents that a cat was stuck in the door and could not be taken out, so we went for a preliminary inspection.

'The animal could not move because its leg was trapped, so we had the neighbours contact the landlord asking if we could enter.'

A splint was applied to the feline's broken leg before it was returned to its owner. It has been taken to the veterinarian for treatment.
