This is the heartwarming moment a mother and daughter who are both commercial pilots had their first flight together.

Captain Holly Petitt and her daughter First Officer Keely Petitt flew a Southwest Airlines flight from Denver, Colorado, to St Louis, Missouri on July 30.

Proud mother Holly - who qualified as a pilot while raising three children - said the flight was a dream come true for her.

She said: ‘It's been a dream come true. Firstly, that I found this career and fell in love with it, and then that one of my kids fell into this and in love with this career too. It's surreal.'

Keely grew up and took after her mother. At 14 years old, she wanted to follow her mother's footsteps and also become a pilot. She earned her pilot's license and interned with Southwest Airlines in fall 2017 to pursue a career in aviation.

'Southwest was always the end goal for me,' Keely said.

'There was really never any other option.'

The Dallas-based carrier said in a statement that mother-of-three Holly used to work as a flight attendant before earning her pilot license.

They said: ‘Holly Petitt started her aviation career fresh out of college as a flight attendant working for another carrier.

‘After riding the jumpseat in the flight deck, she realized she wanted to learn to fly planes.'

Southwest added that the captain obtained her certifications and did training all while being a full-time mother to her three children.

They said: ‘Holly welcomed three beautiful kids and took flight lessons while supporting her family as a full-time mom.

‘With the help of her amazing support system (her husband and mother), she was able to pursue her dream of being a pilot.'

On the other hand, her daughter Keely showed signs of interest with aviation early on at the age of 14 after she was taken on a discovery flight experience in her mother's workplace.

The statement said: ‘Naturally, Holly's daughter, Keely Petitt, grew up around the Southwest Family and became an extension of it.

‘At 14, Keely and her siblings received the gift of a discovery flight. In that moment, she realised she wanted to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a pilot.'

The young pilot earned her pilot's license and landed an internship at Southwest Airlines in 2017 before she became colleagues with her mother and flew the historic flight #3658 from Denver, their hometown.

Southwest Airlines reportedly is one of the carriers with most female pilots and is one of Forbes' Magazine's Best Employers for Diversity in America recently.
