CCTV captured the terrifying moment a man fell into a huge vat of porridge and struggled to get out despite the efforts of bystanders.

On Friday 29 July, the man, named as Muthukumar and one of those cooking the porridge, appeared unsteady on his feet. He appears to rest on the edge of the boiling pot to steady himself, before falling in.

Unable to lift the large man out of the vat, particularly as he is covered in the hot liquid, the man struggles in agony.

Eventually, they drag him out by his ankles, tipping the huge pot over as they do. After which he gets up only to endure another agonising fall as he slips in the liquid.

He was admitted in Madurai Rajaji Hospital with, reportedly, 65% burns. He died of his injuries on 2 August.

The porridge was being cooked as part of the Aadi Velli festival, the most important in Tamil Nadu.

During Aadi Velli, especially in the Pazhanganatham area around Mariamman temple, porridge is cooked in large vats and and served to the public in honour of Goddess Amman.
