With cooking oil prices sky-high around the world, it was perhaps unsurprising that locals rushed to scoop up spilled mustard oil, when a tanker of the stuff overturned in central India's Madhya Pradesh on 1 August.

The incident happened on the Agra-Mumbai Highway in Karua, Morena district.

The tanker was carrying 25 tonnes of cooking oil, most of which ended up on the road.

Spotting this, local residents grabbed utensils to collect the oil.

They were seen scooping it up from puddles it had formed. Some of them were seen carrying pots of oil away.

The tanker overturned due to a broken axle for the rear wheel, which then came off, flipping the truck over.

The incident also caused a traffic jam and small vehicles were said to have slipped on the road due to it being covered with oil.

According to reports, the oil belonged to a company named ML Food. Its employees rushed to the spot to try and prevent locals from looting the oil, even throwing oil the locals had recovered, back onto the ground.
