The trade union , COSATU ( congress of South African Trade Unions) marched in Cape Town against the high levels of crime and violence in the communities. COSATU was joined by affiliates from the teaching and textile workers unions.

The marchers were supposed to hand over a memorandum to the City of Cape Town mayor, Geordin Hill Lewis who failed to show up. He was represented by his chief of staff James Styan who was showed away by the marchers. Styan said that the City agrees with the grievances but feels it is out of the scope of the City of Cape Town.

Marchers held posters calling for and end to gender based violence and an increase of police visibility in communities affected by gangsterism and related crimes.

One of the marchers, Nonubele Tshanga a teacher from Phillipi on the Cape flats raised her concerns about the safety of teachers in schools and the high water tariffs.

COSATU provincial secretary, Mr Melvyn De Bruyn led the marchers to the Provincial Parliament where they staged a protest before handing over a memorandum.
