A man fishing for treasure and interesting historic items with a large magnet on a rope discovered a dead body in the Oudezijds Voorburgwal canal, central Amsterdam. He was fishing in the famous red light district by Sint Jansbrug and Stoofsteeg where several prostitutes work. The girls were initially unaware of what was happening when one end of the street was cordoned off by the police. Because of the sensitive nature they refused to answer questions as to what was going on. It became clear though when a boat arrived along with a crane and a tent was erected. The area remained closed for a few hours but returned to normal by the evening.

The identity of the victim is not yet known and the police say they have no reason to believe he or she was there because of a crime.
