Hundreds of Shia muslims assembled in London for an annual procession to mark the death of Prophet Mohammed's grandson, Imam Hussain who died in 680AD, during the Battle of Karbala, Iraq (August 8).

Mourners dressed in black with some wearing headbands bearing Imam Hussain's name, marched from Marble Arch to the Islamic Universal Association in Holland Park - a different route to previous years when the procession passed through Oxford Street.
Marchers beat their chests and struck themselves with chains to the rythmn of the drumbeat, whilst others carried decorated heavy metal frames, called 'alam' on their shoulders.

Shia imams stressed the importance of remembering Hussain, as a compassionate, dignified, courageous visionary who ultimately lost his life standing up against oppression.
