This is the chaotic moment frenzied Burmese students desperate to leave their civil-war ravaged homeland raced to apply for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) in Myanmar.

Footage shows dozens of aspiring exam-takers sprinting towards the Yangon Exam Centre amid rain at 2:00 am local time on August 4.

Many locals are desperate to leave their country following a brutal military coup which has seen thousands of civilians killed. To enter Japan, they must be able to speak the language.

Due to the demand for forms for the test's N4 level, the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) said it will be printing out 3,000 sheets per day to avoid a repeat of the incident.

The forms will reportedly only be accepted via an online system, with details to be announced later, MAJA said.

The United Nations said most Burmese nationals immigrate to seek better economic opportunities abroad.

Some 4.25 million Burmese migrants work overseas, according to a 2019 estimate by Myanmar's Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population.
