A rare white elephant was born at an animal camp in Myanmar.

The two-week-old albino male weighing almost 82kg was delivered at U Aung Shar elephant camp in Rakhine State on July 23.

Footage shows the newborn calf standing under his mum while delighted caretakers watched them on July 25.

The baby jumbo's mother was part of a group of timber elephants being employed to log wood from the mountains, but the pair was transferred under the supervision of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation.

A Ministry of Environment spokesman said: ‘The elephant was born healthy. He measured 2ft and five inches in shoulder height, 3ft and one inch in body circumference, 2ft in back length and 1ft and six inches in tail length.'

Delighted elephant caretaker U Pho Tartee added: ‘I believe the elephant was a special being. We were happy that he was born from our camp.'

White elephants are regarded as auspicious in Myanmar, a relatively Buddhist country. In Buddhist myth, the Buddha's mother dreamed of a white elephant before conceiving a baby in her womb.
