Market vendors and village leaders held an anti-junta protest on the anniversary of the historic 8888 People's Uprising in Myanmar.

Footage shows the sellers and town heads of Yin Mar Bin and Salingyi staging a strike at a market in Salingyi Township, Sagaing Region on August 8.

They called on resistance forces to 'continue the unfinished 8888 People's Uprising together' as they chanted on the streets.

The 8888 Uprising was a series of student-led, pro-democracy protests that happened in Myanmar in 1988, culminating in a nationwide demonstration on August 8 that year.

It ended on September 18, 1988 - after a bloody coup installed the military junta that would rule Myanmar for the next two decades. Thousands are said to have been imprisoned or killed during the uprising.

Myanmar has suffered ongoing unrest and spiralled towards civil war following the removal of well-liked leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a military coup last February.

Soldiers responded with barbaric force on civilians leading to widespread condemnation and financial sanctions. Rebel groups and civilian militias around the country have been locked in a series of ongoing clashes with the ruling military.
