A pet elephant visits a food stall to eat ice cream on the way home every day.

The 34-year-old sweet-toothed jumbo named Nam Pheung roams a local park with her caretaker where tourists can take selfies with them in Ayutthaya province, Thailand.

However, before leaving for home, the creature will go on a quick side trip to ask the sweets vendor for some desserts.

Footage shows Nam Pheung gobbling the vanilla-flavoured ice cream on a warm day on August 2.

The ice cream cart owner, Klangjai, said: ‘The elephant loves my ice cream. He visits every day and most of the time I give it out for free.

‘She's cute. Sometimes tourists would even buy her ice cream as she won't leave the spot if she doesn't get to eat the ice cream.'

Klangjai added that the jumbo will poke at her and make noises to buy ice cream and use her tusk to ask for money from the mahout.

She said: ‘She would poke me and make noises to buy, then use her tusk to take the monkey from the mahout. She is so smart.'

There are an estimated 4,000 elephants in Thailand. About half of these live in captivity in animal camps, zoos, and sanctuaries or with private owners, while the remainder are found roaming national wildlife parks.

Thai laws forbid the sale or capturing of wild elephants as pets but there are some farms in Ayutthaya province that sells domesticated jumbos.
