The Chinese military has scrambled helicopters and fired missiles near Taiwan after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's controversial visit to the island last week.

Footage shows locals cheering and applauding as a rocket is fired into the sky in Pingtan Island, Fujian province just opposite Taiwan on August 4.

In another clip, several helicopters are seen flying off the coast of the southeastern coastal province.

China said it will be conducting the live-fire drills around Taiwan from August 4 to 7, following Pelosi's brief stop to the island democracy on August 2.

Prior to her visit, furious Beijing, in an escalating military display, also sent jets and warships that crossed the median line in the Taiwan Strait.

Pelosi's trip marks the first time in 25 years that a top-ranking U.S. official has visited Taiwan. The move has enraged Chinese officials, who see it as an affirmation of Taiwan's sovereignty.

Though it is officially known as the 'Republic of China,' Taiwan has been governed separately from mainland China, which is known as the 'People's Republic of China.'

Beijing sees Taiwan as a breakaway province and has, in recent years, stepped up pressure - both economic and military - over it to stake its territorial claims on the island.
