Amazing Thunderstorm Lightning Display From Northern Ireland - Heat Wave Break Down!
Sunday August 14th was an extremely active day of storms across Ireland and N. Ireland with some of the most prolific lightning, power cuts and flash flooding in years. This was the break down to the hot weather we have been having all week when hot and cold air masses clashed, humid hot air from the S meeting an Atlantic trough, the combination of strong heating, high humidity, cold air aloft, lift from the trough, large instability and strong wind shear was the perfect ingredients for explosive thunderstorm development, in fact, a severe thunderstorm watch was issued and an amber warning from the Met Office.
I had been hearing thunder since 5am that morning, all morning, the for hours in the afternoon. The by late evening a magnificent thunderstorm developed in the Republic of Ireland over Co. Mayo, We watched it on radar as it spent hours slowly tracking NE across the country producing constant lightning, it was putting on an epic light show which many haven't seen in years. My mates and I gave chase during the late evening and managed to get to a local north of the border as dusk arrived, the storm was still 20 miles away from us at this time. It put on an awesome light display with regular in-cloud bolts and cloud to ground strikes, my mates and I were buzzing. Here is a selection of clips put together filmed with my DSLR with 15-30mm lens showing the developing action. I also included some slow motion sections and muted sections which had colourful commentary from us. I hope you enjoy the footage. The storm died before it went over us but what we saw here made the chase more than worth it.
