Wildlife videographer Bob Humphries captured rare footage of a numbat, an endangered marsupial species native to Australia.

The video, recorded on August 14, shows the numbat digging for food in Western Australia.

Humphries told Newsflare: "Numbats feed exclusively on termites, eating up to 20,000 per day.

"Numbats used to occur widely across southern Australia but are now endangered and restricted in the wild to a few locations in south-western Western Australia with suitable, termite-rich habitat where fallen eucalyptus trees provide hollow logs that provide shelter, nest sites and protection from predators."

Numbats (Myrmecobius fasciatus), also known as Banded Anteaters or Walpurti, are probably Australia’s most beautiful marsupials, and are unusual because they are active by day. Numbats feed exclusively on termites, eating up to 20,000 per day. Numbats used to occur widely across southern Australia but are now endangered and restricted in the wild to a few locations in south-western Western Australia with suitable, termite-rich habitat where fallen eucalypt trees provide hollow logs that provide shelter, nest sites and protection from predators. Numbats are quite small – 20-29 centimetres long with a brushy tail 12-21 centimetres long. Numbats have long sticky tongues for collecting termites that are located using their acute sense of smell, and possibly hearing. Numbats do not chew the termites they collect, as they do not have functional teeth. Female Numbats do not have a proper pouch, but instead carry their young attached to the four teats located in folded skin on her belly. This male Numbat is searching for termites on the floor of a Wandoo (Eucalyptus wandoo) woodland.
