An escaped goat caused chaos as it rampaged across a Spanish city, fleeing into a jewellery store while police in riot gear gave chase.

The female farm animal tore through Cartagena in Murcia province after entering the city through the Paseo Alfonso XIII road on August 3.

Confused locals watched as the fugitive quadruped wove across the city pavements, pursued by National Police vehicles blaring loud sirens.

Officers finally cornered the elusive creature in an area near the Bar Columbus at 9 pm local time. However, it fled into a newly opened jewellery store and smashed a glass display case before hiding inside the establishment's toilet.

Police locked the animal inside and called shepherds to take it away.

Jewellery store owner Laura Nicolau said: 'We hardly even saw her enter because she was very quick. She had very large horns.

'It's a good thing she didn't hit anyone, especially a child, since she rammed into a glass and easily destroyed it. She later went into the area where the warehouse, patio, and toilet are.'

She added that seven customers were inside when the goat broke into the shop. No one was reported hurt.

After the ruckus it caused, the runaway goat - its feet bound to prevent escape - was safely evacuated by two shepherds from the building.
