An ammunition depot has exploded in Crimea just days after Russian warplanes at a nearby air force base were destroyed.

Footage appeared to show the blasts at a temporary military storage facility in the village of Mayskoye near the city of Dzhankoi in northern Crimea on Tuesday morning, August 16.

Russian official Sergei Aksyonov, who was previously appointed as leader of Mayskoye, said two people had been injured in the explosion.

Russia's Defence Ministry today said there were no 'serious' casualties after the fire broke out at a temporary storage area of the ammunition depot. They said the blaze erupted at around 6.15am local time causing ammunition to detonate.

It is not yet clear what caused the fire and subsequent explosions. Residents living near the warehouse were evacuated.
