Dozens of cars were stuck on a flooded road after continuous heavy rains in northeast Thailand.

The downpour submerged Mittrapap road, leaving several motorcycles and buses trapped in the middle of the deluge in Khon Kaen province on Wednesday morning August 17.

The water had reportedly filled a mile-long stretch of road with bumper-deep floods. Tour buses had to take detours to keep the passengers and the vehicle safe.

The rainstorm in the province left countless households and streets flooded. The most affected area, Ban Phai district, was inundated in 3ft-deep water.

A bus driver said that he had been driving on Mittrapap road but was not aware of the severity of the flood.

He said: ‘The flood water eventually got into the exhaust pipe. Next thing I know, the bus had stopped moving. The passengers have already been transferred to a different vehicle. Now I'm just waiting for the bus to be towed for repairs.'

Khon Kaen province governor Somsak Changtrakul has ordered relevant agencies to help residents in all 26 districts of Khon Kaen province with heavy flooding.

He said: ‘Locals have been informed to watch out for flash floods in mountainous areas, and to also move their valuables to a safe place.

'Relevant agencies and community leaders are in the process of surveying the damage from last night's heavy rain storm.'

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November.

Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
