Varanasi has made rapid strides regarding solar energy. The biggest example has been made for the benefit of this railway. Railway has started getting the benefit of the plant. Last year, 1.6 MW plant was installed at Cantt station of Northern Railway. Due to this, the railway administration is saving Rs 20 lakh per month in electricity head.

There are nine platforms at Varanasi Cantt station. Solar power plants have been installed on the roof of all. Apart from this, a plant has also been set up at the main building of the station. In the summer months, the electricity bill at Cantt station is about 80 lakh rupees per month. At the same time, the average bill per month in the whole year comes up to Rs 60 lakh. The average bill has come down by about Rs 20 lakh per month due to solar power plant.
