Hundreds of Indonesia west coast residents commemorated the 77th Independence Day with an event held at the estuary.

Drone footage filmed at the Batang Arau estuary in Padang city, West Sumatra province, on August 17, shows the flag ceremony being led by soldiers using 12 boats.

The ceremony was also filled with declaring a commitment to maintaining the cleanliness of the Batang Arau River.

The chairman of the Batang Arau Coalition of Concerned Communities (KMPBA), Miko Kamal said the declaration containing the statement that the Batang Arau River was clean of garbage and waste was everyone's right.

Gunung Padang tourism activist, Faula Ismi said that almost all residents in this fishing village area depend on catching fish in the sea, but the amount of garbage scattered in rivers and seas is an obstacle for fishermen when catching fish.

"We hope that the Batang Arau area is free from garbage," Ismi added.

It's the first time the ceremony has been held since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020.
