Meet the ice-cool Thai schoolgirl who is world's youngest two-time drone racing champion
This ice-cool Thai girl has wowed the world with her quick fingers - beating older competitors to become the youngest two-time drone racing champion.
Wanraya Wannapong, 15, known by her nickname Nong Milk, clinched the gold at the women's final of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale World Drone Racing Championships in Shenzhen, China in 2018.
She then went on to defend her title, winning first place again a year later in the competition held in China's Zhejiang province.
The teenager said she started handling drones at the age of eight when she saw her father Artwut tinkering with one of the flying gadgets.
She said: 'I told my dad I wanted to play with it, and since then, I've never stopped. The speed makes it fun.'
Her dad Artwut recalled how he taught his daughter to handle the machines, starting her out on a remote helicopter for the first year. Despite being a beginner, Wanraya showed an instant aptitude for operating the machines.
Artwut said: 'Some people don't know how to fly them and they might require some time to be taught, but with her, she knew how to fly it immediately. When I saw my daughter, I knew she was gifted.'
Wanraya has refused to rest on her laurels and continues a rigorous daily training schedule with her dad to further hone her FPV drone skills. The pair practice every day for three hours after her school classes and again at the weekends.
The family have even built a drone-racing obstacle course outside their home, which is constantly being tweaked to challenge Wanraya even more.
Dedicated Wanraya said: 'I will continue to play with the drone and improve my skills until I lose my physical abilities.'
SUBTITLES
1.48 Hello my name is Wanlaya Wannapong and my nickname is Milk and I'm 15 years old
1.55 I'm a two-time women's world drone racing champion. I started when I was eight. I told my dad I wanted to play and since then, I never stopped
2.04 I saw my dad play so I wanted to try too. The speed makes it really fun
2.12 I will continue to play with the drone and improve my skills until I lose my physical abilities
3.09 Hello my name is Artwut Wannapong. I'm the father of Nong Milk. I wanted the kids to be involved in activities in the evening. Only between me and my daughter
3.21 So I taught her. I bought her a remote helicopter. When playing with these remote control machines, it depends from person to person, some can play and some cannot
3.32 But when I saw my daughter, she managed to use it on her first try. She's gifted. She knew how to fly it the moment she touched it
3.39 Some don't know how to fly it and you might require some time to teach, but with her she knew how to fly it immediately
3.43 She flew a remote helicopter for a year. The expenses involved are quite high and I couldn't afford it. And a friend told me about drone races happening in foreign countries
3.58 He asked me if I was interested. At first, I wasn't but when I let my daughter try and play with it, she liked it. She thought it was more fun and she knew how to use it on her first try
4.06 We arrive at the practice ground around 3:00 PM after her classes. We then practice until 6:00 PM. We spend about three hours. We practice every day
4.15 What I thought is that she'll continue to join the race. I'm not sure this sport will be in the Olympics or Southeast Asia games but as for other races, I make sure she's part of it. She will race until she's not able to
