Newquay harbour is formed by two Quays North and South. The tiny harbour is immensely popular wth holidaying families. It is also a busy working harbour for inshore fishermen who stack gear and unload catches here. After the new Harbourmaster arrived a plan to make the area safer for all was decided upon, this would involve gating the entire North Quay with a code lock giving access only to approved individuals. The general public were to be excluded. The reasoning being mainly aimed at saving tomb-stoning kids injuring themselves by indulging in the time honoured practice of leaping of the harbour walls into the sea at high tide. The practice is not allowed in the Harbour Bye laws and the area comprehensively signed accordingly, to little avail. However the new fencing arrangement was torn down by persons unknown within days of erection, and is now removed whilst a rethink takes place. Local opinion is split as the area has been used for generations by youngsters and parents for dangling buckets and lines to catch crabs. It is also noted that Newquay harbour was mentioned as early as 1439 meaning public have had access for nearly 500 years before the modern health and safety has brought about this situation.
