Stonington Volunteer Fire Company 6-3-5 Box Shamokin Twp. Area of 5965 State Route 61 *behind the Former Shingara Enterprise*
Before 10pm on Wed 8/17 the first alarm was struck for a fire at the above location. Chief 292 (who lives directly across the highway) arrived on scene after dispatch with the owner who stated a control burn got out of control and was now consuming the large wooden structure. Within minutes the fire quickly spread to a 60 'x 250' metal building which was being cleaned out for a trailer assembly business. With fire now consuming the roofline of the larger building, a second alarm was struck with an additional 2 Trucks added.
Access was limited to the scene with 1 road in. Ladder 294 and Squad 175 set up on the Alpha- Delta side and eventually stopped the fire from running the rest of the building.
Snyder Ladder 80 and Mt Carmel L2 were sent to open doors for access for suppression, finding much of the roof collapsed down.
Squad 221 assumed RIT.
Tower 54 was brought into the Alpha-Bravo side and Eng 56, 111, and 31 (pressuriszing the hydrant) laid dual 5" line and supplied from a hydrant 800' away at the former Sunoco.
A tanker shuttle was initially brought in to suppliment and as a secondary water source in case of hydrant failure. 10 Tankers from 3 Counties dumped at least 5-6 times totalling over 110,000 gallons per the Water Supply Officer (102). Eng 631 supplied from the dump tanks
Two fill sites were set up, one near Miller's Gas and Oil, and another on Main Street near Durdachs Offices. 61 and 487.
Ladder 294, Sq175, Tower 54 and Eng 56 flowed an estimated 200,000 per Aqua from the hydrant on the fire.
An excavator was brought in to assist in extinguishing hot spot.
8/18 0430am PPL arrived to secure power to the area and noticed a small fire burning which grew and started up in a pile of tires. The box was dispatched and ultimately held to 6-3, 170, and 290 Tankers along with Sq 175.
Ladder, Tanker, and Utility with 10 members responded to the initial call.
No injuries were reported!
This was a large operation which took many resources to get the job done. Excellent job by NCCC with dispatching and fulfilling requests by the command staff.

A controlled burn on Wednesday night got out of control spread to an Storage Building (18,000-square-foot) and nearby woods brought firefighters several counties (Northumberland, Snyder and Montour counties).
Per Chief Kerry Yordy (Stonington Fire Company) stated Michael Scopelliti owner was burning outside when the wind changed direction and blew the fire into the barn” "When first in units arrived on scene, to find a fully involved structure in the processing of collapsing.” "There was one rekindle overnight”
"We had to use 300,000 gallons of water to put it out."
No injuries have been reported.
Route 61 had to be closed during suppression operations due to the proximity of the fire.
The owner reported the building contained paint and oxygen bottles.
