A frightened monitor lizard scampered up an electricity post after it was chased by aggressive pet dogs.

The hulking Godzilla-like creature spooked residents who saw it clinging onto the utility pole in Saraburi province, Thailand, on August 16.

Using its sharp claws, it fastened itself on the concrete column next to a tangle of electric cables and waited for the canines to leave.

Dog owner Suwit Yamubon, 51, called rescue volunteers when he noticed the reptile still hanging on the post hours later.

Upon arrival, the officers climbed a stepladder and used a snake-catching pole to drag the hefty lizard down to the ground. Surprisingly, it stayed docile while they bound its mouth in cloth.

The reptile was then taken away on a motorcycle, and freed into nature.

Suwit said: ‘I first spotted the lizard in the garden. I was afraid it might attack my house so our dogs and I drove it away.

‘It then climbed up the post. I did not want it to get electrocuted so I called for help.'

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
