A stranded dad carrying his son was rescued from a waist-deep flash flood that surged through their home in northern Thailand on Sunday.

Footage shows the brave father carrying the youngster in his arms while they were trapped in the middle of the torrents of water following heavy rain n Phetchabun province on August 21.

Rescuers fitted the pair with life vests before helping them cross the deluge using a safety rope.

Surin Chanthawong, chief of the Pa Sak River basin survey station, said two tributaries of the Pa Sak River had overflowed and triggered flash floods up to 15ft deep, which inundated nearby homes.

The local government has sent volunteers to help with evacuations and set up a temporary feeding centre for the refugees in the affected areas. However, Phetchabun Governor Krit Kongmuang said ongoing powerful floods have impeded operations.

The Office of National Water Resources raised flash flood and runoff warnings over twenty provinces for August 20 to 24 last Thursday.

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November.

Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
