Severe floods have transformed roads into rivers following heavy rain in Indonesia.

Footage shows the floodwater submerging a street in Sorong, the largest city in West Papua province, as locals waded through the waist-deep muddy deluge on August 23.

Local media said thousands of houses had been inundated by floods after downpours pummeled the city starting Monday.

The rains also triggered a landslide that killed a woman, 35, and her son, 8, in the West Sorong district.

Herlin Sasabone, Sorong disaster mitigation chief, said the disaster agency is coordinating with the National Search and Rescue, the Indonesian Military, and the National Police to observe the flooding in Sorong.

Indonesia and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November.

Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
