An escaped crocodile was caught running loose on a road after it fled from its pen during floods in Thailand.

The 6ft-long animal weighing more than 10 kilograms was spotted rampaging along a highway in Trat province on August 23.

Terrified drivers stopped while locals tried to lure the croc away from the thoroughfare fearing it would harm other villagers.

Using long wooden poles and a fertiliser sack, they managed to trap the creature and pin it down while waiting for animal rescuer volunteers to arrive.

The officers then delivered the predator to the Khlong Yai District Association Office and are investigating the identify of its owner.

Residents believe that the fugitive reptile had escaped a farm during the flood and had been left to roam the neighborhoods without its caretaker knowing.

It is unclear how old and what gender the crocodile is. Khlong Yai District fisheries have been informed about the incident and said they will be handling the case.
