Explosions and a fire at a biogas plant caused a thick cloud of smoke over Munich Airport in Germany on Thursday morning August 25.

Shocked passengers leaving a plane that had just landed noticed the large dark grey plume rising into the sky behind the control tower to the west of the airport.

One passenger is heard saying in the video 'it's a bit dark, that's not good'.

The filmer said the smoke 'looked like a large fire due West of Munich International'.

A Munich Airport spokesman said: 'A biogas plant outside the airport ground is on fire.'

Footage from residents showed that the fire had started in grounds just outside the airport. Flight arrivals and departures have reportedly not been affected by the blaze, which reportedly started at a biogas plant.

Firefighters attended the 'large scale' inferno, which local media reported was accompanied by several explosions.

An airport spokesman added: 'There are no flights affected at the moment. For capacity reasons the northern runways is used for departures and the southern runway arrivals because of the smoke development in the north of the airport.'
