Officials from Mariupol City Council have posted this video of fires apparently raging in the city with no one to put them out. Petro Andriushchenko, an advisor to the exiled mayor of Mariupol who first shared the video, claimed a fire in one district has destroyed multiple homes due to inaction from the Russian forces and their administration who now occupy the city after a long siege that lasted months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February. Officials claimed the fire had spread to residential building, a school, and had spread in the Skhidny district from an oil plant. “Ash is flying all over the county. The situation is complicated by strong storm winds, which carry ash into windowless houses, creating new ignition points. City in smoke!” The council reports that locals have taken matters into their own hands by tackling them themselves.
