Monsoon floods bring devastation to Pakistan

Violent streams of mud and water flow through Pakistani villages in Bubur Ghizer, Galgit Baltistan, after monsoons brought heavy flooding. Locals show their destroyed houses and say that everything has been damaged and nothing is left.

At least 937 people have died due to the devastating floods, 343 are children, and 30 million are left without shelter.

The Government of Pakistan has declared a national emergency. The most affected areas are Balochistan , Kyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab province. Severe flooding has also been reported in the Gilgit Baltistan area.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority, Pakistain received 166.8 mm of rain in August, as opposed to the average of 48 mm - an increase of 241 percent. Sindh and Balochistan respectively witnessed a 784 percent and 496 percent increase.

Sherry Rehman, the Federal Minister for Climate Change, said that Pakistan is going through its eighth cycle of monsoon. Normally, the country experiences three to four cycles of monsoon rain only.
