Early rising Notting Hill Carnival revellers spray each other in paints and powders at opening event
Notting Hill Carnival has began in west London, starting with a J'Ouvert opening event with revellers throwing colourful paints and powders.
This was the first carnival in three years after a hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The word J’Ouvert is derived from the French "jour ouvert," meaning "opening of the day."
