A caring college professor turns old advertising boards into mini-homes to protect street dogs from the blistering tropical sun and driving rain in Thailand.

Yodsapon Jantongjeen from the Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin came up with the project, which she named 'Stand For Stray,' after seeing how the homeless dogs in her neighbourhood on the outskirts of Bangkok would struggle with the weather.

The pooches would wander around under the burning sun with temperatures soaring above 30 degrees Celsius every day and also get drenched by the monsoon downpours.

She said: 'Whenever it rained, I would try to call the dogs to my house and even try to guide them to the nearest shelter, but they would just growl and bark at me.'

With the dogs' welfare in mind, she began experimenting with different shed designs, attempting to find a blueprint that was efficient in terms of both cost and space.

Yodsapon admitted that the model is still in its development stage, since rain and wind can still blow into the sheds during powerful storms.

However, the mini-kennel shelters with slanted roofs have been useful for providing the dogs with much-needed shade on hot days.

She added: 'I look forward to coming up with better designs for these shelters. I thought I could add a cover on the side to block the rain.

'My goal is to come up with a very simple design using common materials so anybody can implement it easily for the strays in their neighbourhood. Anybody can download the plan for free from my website.'

1.38 My name is Yodsaporn Jantongjeen, or my nickname is Gap. I teach Interior design at the Pohchang Academy of Arts
1.46 I have to mention that the Stand for Stray project is not only the resting spot we see today. I have done an in-depth study and so I came up with solutions to this problem in two categories, that is short-term and long-term
2.04 For short-term, we look at the welfare of these animals by using the resting spot we see right here
2.10 I first started at home. The strays outside my house didn't have anywhere to stay and nowhere to hide from the rain
2.19 I call them inside my house and they wouldn't come in and they also won't let me touch them so I didn't know what to do. And that's when I came up with this idea and as for the space, I didn't want to disturb the public area so I came up with a very easy structure
2.29 That is easy to install and easy to use. For the material used, I searched for recycled materials. I thought of ways to make it cheap and easy to make and not complicated
2.44 So it can be accessed by anybody and can easily be followed. This model here is available for download through my website
2.58 You can use this model and implement it in real-time. This one I just made does not have a place to feed water and food but in the recent model, I came up with a place to feed them as well
3.10 But when I tried using it, it wasn't very convenient. A lot of adjustments still have to be done and also for the sun, wind, and rain direction, there are still some limitations to the design
3.19 It has to be installed on a wall and it also needs some space for installation so I can't predict the rain and the wind's direction
3.33 Sometimes the rain can also enter through the side and so for the new design, I came up with a cover to cover and allow the least amount of rain in
3.47 In terms of design development, I have to experiment and learn what works and what doesn't. I am focused on spreading the use of this design in other areas
3.58 So give out this model for free to multiply the number of installations and production. The welfare of stray dogs in the city and other areas can improve
