A delivery driver for British supermarket chain Asda was seen whacking a motorcyclist with a large pole in east London.

The road rage worker confronted the man following an incident with his scooter, which was knocked on the ground in front of the van on Clapton Common in Hackney, on August 29.

Onlookers recorded the driver in a fluorescent yellow vest repeatedly swinging at the other road user and striking him shortly before 9 pm. He hit him at least five times in front of the supermarket entrance.

The motorcycle rider responded with a flurry of punches as a frantic woman yelled "hey, Asda man, stop".

Shocked passersby broke up the brawl and calmed down the two men before the rider and the Asda worker went their separate ways.

One local who witnessed the fight said: "I expected better behaviour from someone representing a company like Asda. Attacking someone with a big weapon like that just isn't on. He could have done some real damage."

Onlooker Rabbi Efrayim Goldstein said he notified local police and the council about the incident but had not heard anything back.

He added: "I don't know what started the fight but it was inappropriate."

Asda, which is owned by the U.S. chain Walmart, has been contacted for comment on the incident but has not yet replied.

The Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at 20:37 pm on Monday, August 29 to reports of an altercation in Clapton Common, E5.

"Members of the public broke up the altercation before both men drove off.

"One man, who was reportedly hit with a stick-type object, was taken to an east London hospital with non-life-threatening or life-changing injuries.

"No arrests have been made. Enquiries continue."
