Police chased protesters who threw objects during a rally following a constitutional change referendum in Chile.

Footage shows security forces pursuing the rallyists and blasting them with a water cannon while they threw stones at police vehicles at the Plaza Baquedano in Santiago City on September 5.

The chaos follows the empathic rejection of Chileans of a proposed 'leftist' constitution that was envisioned to expand social rights, focus on environmental regulation, emphasize gender parity, and increase indigenous representation in public office.

Roadblocks reportedly occurred in Santiago, including at the intersection of Alameda and Irene Morales and at Plaza Baquedano in the Caribeneros neighbourhood.

The Parque Bustamante, Universidad Catolica and Baquedano subway stations on Lines 1 and 5 were also closed as a precaution due to the nearby demonstrations in the evening of September 4.

Further disruptions to rail service are possible in the coming days as protesters gather near subway stations. Clashes between police and protesters are likely. Businesses could remain closed if the unrest continues or is particularly severe.
