A fire ripped through the roof of a Morrisons supermarket in Birmingham on Sunday.

The blaze engulfed the top of the building along Hagley Road as dozens of firefighters raced to hose it down at about 6 am local time on September 4.

The West Midlands Fire Service said the flames have been extinguished with 'minimal damage' caused to the building's interior. They added that the fire was 'accidental' but did not specify what caused it.

The West Midlands Metro service said the incident caused a temporary travel disruption as officers closed off parts of the road, with Metro trams being suspended in the area.

A Morrisons spokesperson said in a statement: 'There was an external fire at our Edgbaston store in the early hours of this morning but thankfully no one has been hurt.

'The store will be temporarily closed whilst we assess the extent of any damage.'
