Such highly controversial devices have become widespread amongst by law enforcement in the UK with use spiralling by regional forces in the UK. Whilst only authorised for use after a person has first spat at police a number of highly controversial cases have occurred. Devon and Cornwall officers have used such masks on children younger than eleven years on two occasions. The outgoing head of the Metropolitan police Cressida Dick stated that SBGs would only be used by custody staff and NOT during arrests. Devon and Cornwall police Supt Ian Drummond Smith has defended the roll out saying the SBG masks are for the safety and support of our officers staff and those working alongside. Amnesty International says the masks were "a cruel and dangerous form of restraint". Wether the masks provide any health protection to those in contact with the wearer has yet to be proven.
