Durian vending machines were installed across the Thai capital Bangkok so that fans of the seasonal stinky fruit can enjoy it all year round.

The fridges stand 7ft-tall and are painted yellow to match the sweet, creamy fruit they hold inside.

Nine vending machines have been placed at different spots all over Bangkok, including MRT and BTS train stations and department stores.

The Department of Internal Trade said: ‘We organised a campaign to encourage local consumption of durian fruit by installing automatic vending machines in the city. This way, everyone can enjoy the fruit all year.'

During the testing stage, the machines will be available to the public until next year. More frozen durian vendors will be distributed in gas stations and 200 branches of retail and wholesale stores across the country after January 2023.

Durian is a tropical fruit distinguished by its large spikes and pungent smell. It has a sweet taste and creamy consistency despite the strong odours.

In Asia, durian is sometimes referred to as the ‘King of Fruit' after fanatics drive prices of its best varieties to ridiculous amounts. In 2019, a durian sold for 40,134 GBP at an auction in Thailand's Nonthaburi province.
